China Glaze x Jurassic World: Dominion Collection – Swatches & Review

Y’all like some dinosaurs? Who doesn’t love dinosaurs, I know I do. So do I have the collection for you!

China Glaze has collaborated with the upcoming new movie, Jurassic World: Dominion, for a great 8 piece themed release. We have a couple creams, and then some interesting shimmers and flakes and textures all throughout this. All of the names relate to the movie, as well as the polishes themselves. I love when a mainstream brand does a more interesting collaboration, so I was so excited for these shades!

As always I grabbed this set from polishpick.com – always great discounts and prices on polish and fast shipping! Never any complaints. (If you happen to purchase, you can mention Gingerly Polished – I make nothing from it but it lets the brand see where the traffic is coming from!)

I’m keeping it short here, as I’m sure you just want to get into these polishes, and see what they’re all about, so let’s get on into the swatches!

First up to start us off on this dino-themed ride, this is ‘Let ‘Em Roar’. This is a deeper berry pink base with tons of golden shimmer all throughout. Formula-wise, this was a thicker polish on the nails, which just made it super smooth and very easy to control, with no running or flooding of the cuticles even with more of a thicker coat. This was an easy 2 coat formula here.

Next up we have ‘Orange You Fierce’, and I think it’s a truly fitting name. This is a super bright citrus orange shimmer base with tons of golden shimmer all throughout. The formula is more of a dense glitter in a jelly base so it’s a touch more sheer, but I was able to build it up fully on the nails with 3 thin coats. And then it just glows on the nails, super gorgeous.

Next up we have ‘Preserved in Amber’, and really another polish where they nailed the inspiration and namesake. This is a dense golden-yellow glitter base with larger golden metallic flakes all throughout. This was pretty well opaque in 2 coats, though I did add a 3rd to cover any last nail line with that dense glitter.

I was a touch worried about the flakes in this one, but they picked up easily and distributed well on the nails. There are some larger ones, like you can see on my pinky, so those would have to be placed a touch more with the brush, but overall they were good. They didn’t stick up off the nails at all and were pretty well smooth.

Alright, next up we have this interesting shade. This is ‘Olive to Roar’, and as you can guess it’s an olive green shade, with some texture. Now it was so much more textured with just 2 coats – very bumpy and almost like a sandy finish (which you can definitely see in the swatch video below). But with the 3rd coat it smoothed out so much and just became almost bumpy. Maybe it’s supposed to be like dinosaur skin or something, but I don’t know if I quite loved it. It just looked a little like I messed up application, so I wish they had committed more. Although I don’t mind an experiment.

For the texture, it’s more of a jelly-finish. I definitely recommend having enough on the brush or it can skip a little more. On nails where I used 2 thicker coats it felt opaque, though for most nails I did a 3rd to cover any last patches and nail line. Overall an interesting shade, what do you think?

Another one with a unique finish! This is ‘Raptor Round Your Finger’, and it’s a deeper teal green shimmery base with large metallic teal flakes all throughout. Now the base of this was very pigmented and basically opaque in just 1 coat – I did 2 as always and to place more of the flakes.

You can see in the video as well, but for the flakes I did prefer to swipe the brush onto the nails a couple times, to transfer them to the nail and distribute them more. They placed pretty well and picked up on the brush easily. Now they are more uneven, and stick up just a touch, but nothing that’ll get caught. A good coat or two of top coat can fully even it out as well.

Next up we have ‘You Should Know Beta’. This is a deeper shimmery blue shade with larger glitters all throughout – giving it a textured finish. I could have top coated and smoothed out this swatch and made it all beautiful, but I never put top coat on my swatches (unless mentioned) so that you can see exactly how it’ll dry on your own nails.

But overall those larger glitter pieces didn’t make it harder to apply at all – you might need a touch of a thicker 2nd coat to cover all of the pieces and get in the spaces, but overall it was still smooth and easy to paint on. This was just 2 coats and it was opaque.

Last up we’re into the 2 more neutral cream shades. First up we have ‘Sandy Scales’, a cool toned, almost mauve-y rosy brown cream shade that dries with a more satin-matte finish. This was a gorgeous nude on my specific skintone, and a perfect little palate cleanser if needed.

I had just a few ridges peeking through after the 1st coat, but a 2nd easily covered and made it fully opaque. It was a lovely smooth formula. And because it dries with that matte finish, it dried more quickly – but you still have plenty of time to work with the formula.

And last, but certainly not least we have ‘T-Rex Appeal’ and what we might call the tamest finish of the bunch. šŸ˜‚ This is a super light gray cream shade, with definite blue tones to it. It can almost look sky blue depending on the lighting. And nothing crazy formula-wise either, just a standard lovely and smooth 2 coat cream formula. A good end!

And that’s the set! Overall such an interesting collection, and I loved that they went for it with the theme! I do always love when mainstream brands try something new, even if sometimes it doesn’t quite work fully. I love the different finishes and styles, and I think they nailed the look. There’s a little something for everyone here. Did any shades catch your eye?

  1. I don’t like glittery, chunky or textured polishes, I usually hate hate hate beige polishes, but somehow all of this collection spoke to me. I grabbed every single one at Polish Pick, except Olive to Roar, and that one will be coming soon enough.

    Such a fun, lively collection!

    • I think it was just absolutely perfect for the theme and they fit the dinosaur look so well! It just worked out so well, and normally I wouldn’t love some of these either but I really enjoy any sort of creative polishes! I hope you love them!
