OPI x Barbie the Movie Collection – Swatches & Review

PURCHASED

Have you all heard of a little movie that’s out right now? A little movie called Barbie? I’m sure you haven’t seen anything about it at all.

Listen, if you’re sick of it by now, if you’re haunted by all the versions of the lyrics “I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world”, if you see pink in every single waking moment – I’m sorry to say look away now, there’s another Barbie collaboration we’re looking at today.

That’s right, MORE BARBIE, BRING IT ON. In all seriousness though, I do love all of these releases. I love the resurgence of Barbie as well as wearing pink for adults. I’m so happy and pleased, and come on, if it makes you happy and isn’t hurting anyone, what more can we ask for. (I get it can seem like a lot, but we’re living in Hot Barbie Summer right now, in an age of 2 original Blockbusters dominating at theaters, at sold out shows at 10am, and as an avid moviegoer I couldn’t want anything more).

So yes, let’s look at this newest Barbie collaboration. This is a new release from OPI celebrating, of course, the Barbie movie. We have 9 gorgeous shades, in some obvious tones of pink, as well as some blue and yellow and lots of glitter and sparkle. These shades all come with a special cap, with the OPI logo and Barbie the Movie printed on it. So you’ll never forget where these came from. I will say it’s not directly printed on the caps, but instead is a separate plastic wrap – not my favorite but I do love a themed package.

All of these shades are available from polishpick.com as well as from Beyond Polish (as always I have an affiliate link and code – GINGERLYPOLISHED – with Beyond Polish that gives you a 10% discount on individual items. I do make a small commission from each sale – but no pressure to use and purchase as always).

So alright, let’s get on into the swatches now! Let’s go Barbie. (I had to).

Up first we’re starting out with the lightest cream shade. This is ‘Bon Voyage to Reality’ (what I wish I could say during a work day really) and it’s a super light, white-based almost beige-y pink cream. The softest of pinks really – I have cooler pink undertones in my skin, so it’s pulling more neutral on me, but on warmer undertones it’ll really show more of that pink.

For the formula, since it is more white-based, it is more streaky, especially on that 1st coat. I still had some streaks on the 2nd coat, as the ridges on my nails can cause, so I did add a 3rd and that did make it fully opaque. I do recommend floating your coats on, aka putting your brush parallel to the nail and putting as little pressure as possible, and that’ll get you the smoothest finish. If you add too much pressure on the brush you can add streaks back in. So a touch of a finicky formula, which I’ve come to expect with such light shades as these.

Next up is ‘Best Day Ever’. This is one of the 4 shimmers we have in the set, and it’s just so interesting. This is a light ballet pink shimmery metallic base filled with scattered holographic glitters.

Like I said this one is so interesting. It’s a metallic, but almost a jelly as well? I don’t want to say sticky but it almost sticks to itself, like actually jelly. It still applied smoothly and easily onto the nails, and I built it up with 3 thin coats. Depending on your application, you could be set with just 2. It does end up a touch textured after drying, but a top coat will smooth it all out and really bring out those sparkles. Overall such an interesting formula! Nothing I’ve really seen before.

Now we get to our first true pink cream. This is ‘Feel the Magic’, and it’s a cooler-toned almost orchid pink cream shade. I absolutely love shades like this on my own cooler undertones.

And this has a gorgeous formula, an easy 2 coats to opaque. It painted on super smoothly and I had no complaints – truly here to fulfill all of your Barbie needs.

And don’t worry, we also fulfill the warm side of the pink needs as well with ‘Hi Barbie!’. This one is a classic Barbie pink, that bright fuchsia pink cream.

Of course this formula is gorgeous as well. It had just a few streaks left after that 1st coat, that a 2nd easily covered. Super smooth to paint on, and now I’m fully ready to finally see the movie.

‘Welcome to Barbieland’ is the next of our shimmers. This is a bright fuchsia shimmer, really the shimmery-metallic counterpart to ‘Hi Barbie!’ above.

It’s a little more sheer on the 1st coat than I was expecting, but it builds up well with that 2nd. Depending on your application and preferences, you might want a 3rd to further build up the color, but it paints on smoothly and easily overall.

The match to ‘Hi Barbie!’ above, now we have ‘Hi Ken!’. This is a bright sunshine yellow cream shade, more on the cooler tone end of yellows. Perfect for the sunshine of Ken (and Ryan Gosling).

The first coat was more streaky and uneven, which I always expect with any yellow shade. A 2nd coat builds it up well, though I did still have some streaks. I’ve mentioned it so many times but I have very ridged nails that often cause more streaks, and can add another coat that others might not need, so always keep that in mind! Most will be set with just 2 coats, though I did personally add a 3rd. It paints on nicely overall, and it was a solid yellow to add to a collection.

Next up is ‘My Job is Beach’ and really that’s my favorite line from the trailer, it’s just so funny. And perfect for any beach job, this is a bright sky blue cream shade. You know, like the sunny sky on a nice beach day. You get it.

I had some streaks and patches on the 1st coat, but it easily covered and was fully opaque with a 2nd. Super smooth and lovely to paint on and such a summery shade!

‘Yay Space!’ (how I felt at the Air & Space museum we visited when in D.C. honestly) is an icy light blue dense shimmer shade.

This had one of the more sheer formulas of the set, being a dense shimmer – so it’s about building it up on the nail. This was 3 thin coats and you can still see a touch of nail line peeking through at certain angles. But that same shimmer helps to cover and distract from those patches, so it’s a fun look and will depend on your own preferences! I ain’t mad at it.

Last but certainly not least we have ‘Every Night is Girls Night’ (as it SHOULD be). This is a clear base filled with a dense platinum gold/silver shimmer and larger silver hexagons all throughout.

Now this one can be used as 1 coat as a topper – especially over a darker base that shimmer will really contrast and POP. But I chose to show it as a look on it’s own. This is just 2 coats, and you can see that shimmer really layers up well and creates such a sparkly party look. It could be a touch busy with 3 coats, but as always it’ll depend on your own preferences!

And that’s the set! I loved it, and I may just be biased with every single Barbie collaboration that’s coming out lately. But I feel like this does fit the Barbie movie theme well, and any of these shades will be perfect to wear to the movies, as you eat popcorn out of the pink Barbie corvette.

Are you picking up any of these shades?
