Orly ‘Plot Twist’ Fall 2023 Collection – Swatches & Review

PR SAMPLE

The weather has absolutely been SWINGIN’ here in Chicago and it truly cannot make up its mind. We had some little peeks of gorgeous fall weather for a week or so, and I was thriving in those 60s and low 70s. HOWEVER. Now we once again have some rampant 85 degree weather days on the horizon, THEY JUST WON’T LET GO, and I’m going to need it to stop.

But if you’re like me, and not letting that residual hot weather stop you from wearing all of the pumpkin orange and cozying up in a chair with a good mystery paperback, this release is for you.

That’s right, as you can tell by the title, we’re looking at Orly’s newest seasonal set for Fall 2023. It’s the ‘Plot Twist’ collection, but the color palette is anything but. We have 5 creams and then 1 deep shimmer, and all of these colors are going to feel familiar. They feel cozy, they feel comfortable, like an oversized sweater or the above mentioned well-read mystery book. Maybe there’s not actual twist here in colors, but we’ll act surprised anyways.

If you’re intrigued, these polishes are available as always on the Orly website as well as on Beyond Polish (though some of the shades there are sold out there).

Now let’s get on into the swatches!

We’re starting out with our lightest shade here. This is ‘Shaky Alibi’ and it’s a rosy, almost dusty and muted beige cream. This is one that’ll pull differently depending on your skin undertones, and on my cool skin, it’s really bringing out that pinky-redness of it.

This has that standard gorgeous Orly cream formula, with an easy and smooth 2 coats. It paints on so well, especially with Orly’s wider, round brush and I have no complaints. Not a streak in sight with this more neutral shade, and a great way to start out this set.

Next up we have my favorite category of shade, the “prugly”, pretty-ugly color, as Orly even called it themselves. It’s WEIRD so of course I love it. This is ‘Act of Folly’, and it’s a sort of mustardy, almost olive green leaning yellow cream. One might say close to the color of real olives. It’s a little dusty, it’s a little muted, and of course, not everyone’s going to be here for it.

No matter what you have to say about the color, this has another lovely formula. An easy 2 coats, with the 2nd covering any of the ridges in my nails that are trying to peek through. So smooth to paint on, and I don’t care how you think, I love this color.

Next up we have the shade ‘Don’t Be Suspicious’. Listen, all that’s playing in my head is that scene from Parks & Rec with Jean-Ralphio and Mona Lisa singing ‘Don’t be suspicious, don’t be suspicious’. A classic.

And another classic is a rich brown chocolate cream for fall! This shade is just like a nice chocolate bar on the nails. Of course, just like the others, it has another easy 2 coat formula. The 2nd coat covers any last patches that were left behind, and it’s rich and pigmented all around.

Next up we have ‘In the Conservatory’. This is another truly essential fall color – where would we be without burnt oranges in the autumn? This particular one is that dusty brick-orange shade that we immediately think of, but maybe with a touch of a cooler tone to it. It’s a little dustier than others I have in my collection, if you want a touch of a “toned” down fall orange look.

You know the drill, another easy 2 coat formula here. Super smooth and so easy to paint on.

Onto the last cream of the set! This is ‘Unraveling Story’, and it’s a dusty, muted, blue-toned deeper gray shade. It’s moody, it’s perfect for those gray, rainy fall days.

And this has a fantastic formula! It’s incredibly pigmented, and is practically opaque in just 1 coat. I always do 2 coats with any of my manicures, but I always like to note when we get a one-coater just in case you’re looking for a super quick out the door look.

Now it’s time for the star of the show! This is ‘Endless Night’ and it’s the one shimmer of the collection. This is a deep, blue-toned, almost gunmetal gray shimmer, and it may even have a touch of very subtle holographic glitters to it.

And this shade helps us end the set with another incredible formula as well. This one is so pigmented and rich and is practically opaque in just 1 coat. Again, that doesn’t matter to me as I’m always doing 2 coats no matter what, but I always like to note it. With it being a shimmer, I was on the lookout for brushstrokes, but they’re really not noticeable on the nails.

That’s the set! Orly always has some stunning cream formulas, and the ones in this set are no different! There are some “classic” fall shades to add to a stash if you’re missing out, and that gorgeous shimmer for a little pop of something more. Overall you won’t be disappointed with any of these shades!
