Mooncat ‘Lost in a Folktale’ Collection – Swatches & Review

Yes it’s true, I am unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Mooncat. YES, I did in fact make a Twilight reference for that, and I’m not ashamed. We all know the cultural impact that franchise had on us.

And it’s accurate, because Mooncat truly HAS stole my heart. The collections and color palettes they’ve been releasing lately have been SO COOL and so unique, and I just want them all. Especially with this mystical, forest themed set we’re looking at today, I basically had no choice. (Always a joke here, obviously we don’t NEED nail polish, and we should never go into debt for it).

So let’s look at this set of 6 beautiful shades. This is the ‘Lost in a Folktale’ collection, and as the title suggests, it gives out all of the whimsical and magical vibes of a sunny forest. We have 6 shades in a variety of finishes, from flakey, to shimmery, to magnetic. A little something for all forest moods.

These are, of course, available on the Mooncat website – both in a little discounted bundle as well as individually. These photos just speak for themselves, so let’s dive right in already! Onto the swatches!

We’re starting right out with ‘Shroomdom’ – perfect name for the forest, who doesn’t love mushrooms. This shade is a bright warm red jelly base filled with gold and iridescent flakes all throughout.

The 1st coat on this one was smooth and covered well – though with that jelly base you do have a touch of nail line still peeking through. But the 2nd coat builds up well and pretty well covers. Depending on the length of your nails and application, you might want a 3rd to continue to build up the base and cover up any last nail line, but it depends on your preferences!

Right along the same flakey lines, next up we have ‘Stumped’. This one is a deep brown jelly base filled with multichrome flakes and that SHIFT, that CONTRAST. This one feels like fall in a bottle, but I don’t care, I think it’s gorgeous. (And yes, of course, I will also wear it in the fall).

Because of that jelly base it’s a touch sheer on the 1st coat and it’s about building up the base color. I ended up using 3 thin coats to fully cover any last nail line and patches, especially at the end of my nails. Those flakes just layer up so well and create so much depth and I love it.

‘Flight of the Monarchs’ is a dense, bright orange microshimmer with a strong purple shift. Photos don’t do it justice, and I wasn’t able to fully capture that purple, but it is so shifty and magical. With lower, indirect lighting, you’ll pull more of that purple, which you can see a tiny bit in the 2nd photo.

Since it’s a dense microshimmer, it is a touch more sheer again and just about building it up fully. I used 3 thin coats to fully cover all of my nail line, and it’s just so glowy and lovely on the nails.

Next up we have ‘Poisonberry’ and it’s just so pretttttyyyy. This is a more sheer purple jelly base filled with a gorgeous lilac purple microshimmer and larger scattered holographic glitters. It has a gorgeous flip from a warmer purple to a bright cool-toned silvery purple that you can see in the middle of the nails.

Again, another jelly here so a touch more sheer, especially on that 1st coat! But I was able to build it up to fully opaque with 3 thin coats. It paints on smoothly and easily, especially with their wider brush, and I had no complaints!

‘Pixiestick’ is another dense microshimmer, this time in an off-white with an insane mint green flash that shifts to a purple. Seriously the green in this is WILD. I wore this as a full manicure, and in the limited sunlight we actually got here, it was just SHINING green. So cool.

You know the drill now, since it’s a dense microshimmer, it’s a touch more sheer on the 1st coats. It’s nothing against Mooncat, any dense shimmer like this would be the same way. But I was able to build it up fully in 3 thin coats, and it was just so gorgeous on my nails. Definitely a favorite!

And of course I saved the most magical for last! This is ‘Weeping Willow’, and it’s a deep forest green base filled with emerald magnetic shimmer. Of course, I’m always excited for a new magnetic.

This was fully smooth and opaque with just 2 coats, though I did find a 3rd continued to deepen up the base even more and smoothed out the tiny bit of texture I had from the glitter. The magnetic effect is easy to create, and I just love how much it contrasts with the darker base!

And that’s the set! Like I said, it’s so unique and different from other shades in my collection, and I love Mooncat for new color palettes and finishes. Obviously, this won’t be for everyone, especially if you like a more subdued polish, but if you’re looking for something new, I highly recommend any Mooncat polishes! I’ve been fully sucked in.

Obviously with the finishes of this set, they’re a touch more sheer and just need to be built up. But those 3 coats were easy, and I didn’t mind as well, especially for the lovely finishes!
