OPI ‘Metallic Mega Mix’ Fall 2024 Collection – Swatches & Review

*Blows dust off of blog, sits back down and powers up the machine* Alright, let’s get into it.

Of course what seems to always bring me back to this blog is a new OPI seasonal release. I’ve mentioned many a-time that my OPI collection posts are always the most popular, and based on the views I continually get for older releases, y’all like to use them as a reference. It would just feel wrong for me at this point to ever skip an OPI review, and it was itching at the back of my brain, pushing me to finally finish. So I’m very sorry for letting this reference sit in my drafts for far too long. (I will say I have been keeping up on my Instagram, and these swatches have been up there for a while. But blog posts are much easier to search and pull up at any moment’s need).

So alight, maybe you looked at OPI’s summer collection full of 12 creams and said “simply not for me, I don’t like creams”. Well, OPI heard you and said “FINE. We’ll give you a full set of a DIFFERENT FINISH.” Hey, maybe at this rate, we’ll get a collection of entirely holographic shades for winter. (I’m role-playing here as if I finished this post earlier, before the winter collection was officially announced and released).

This is the ‘Metallic Mega Mix’ collection for Fall 2024, and I’ll bet you can’t guess what finish they chose for this season.

WOW, you’re RIGHT. We have 12 new metallic shades here, and their overall vibe is just autumnal to me. The color palette feels like a nice chilly day, one spent apple picking or in a pumpkin patch. (I’m sorry to any readers if that’s only direct to other Midwesterners. But once you have an apple cider donut, you’ll understand our obsession).

These polishes are available from BeyondPolish.com in both normal lacquer and gel formulas (GingerlyPolished as always gets you 10% off individual items. It is affiliated so I would make a small commission if you use it, so no pressure as always! I love their site and I’m here to get you a little deal). Or they’re available from PolishPick as well. I’ll always only recommend sites that I’ve personally purchased from multiple times with no issues.

ALRIGHT, ON INTO THE SWATCHES.

We’re doing my favorite thing, which is going in rainbow order, and we have a fun little spectrum of colors here. Of course, you’ll never get every single shade and color in a collection, but you have 12 good options to start out.

We’re diving in with ‘Cyber Cherry on Top’. This has a very accurate name, as it’s truly a bright, blue-toned cherry red metallic shade with an almost pink flash to it. It has the tiniest shimmers also separate from that metallic base, but they’re not very noticeable.

And we start out with a lovely formula. I was able to get this opaque in just 2 coats, with the 2nd coat coming in to even out any last patches I had. Overall this one had the smoothest more shimmer finish overall, at least compared to the rest of the collection. For being the “metallic mega mix”, this shade was the least metallic of the bunch, but I promise there are still true metallics ahead.

Next up is ‘CD ROM-antic’ and my little millennial heart is thoroughly enjoying these names. This shade is also red, yes, but much deeper and warmer than the red above. It’s a rusty brick red shade and it feels like an “essential” fall color.

This one was a touch sheer on the 1st coat, almost feeling more like a dense shimmer than a foil. But the 2nd coat comes in with that pigment and builds up the color to full opacity. You can see in this one how that metallic look is much more “prominent” on this one. Don’t go expecting full chrome looks or foiled finishes, but the shimmer is so gorgeous on all of these.

‘Liquid Fire’ is a shade with another fitting name. This polish just feels like I dipped my hands in lava. (Anyone else ever have the urge to just touch lava when you see videos of it? I know I absolutely cannot but it just looks cool and gloopy). Anyways, this is a bright pumpkin orange with a golden shimmer running throughout it.

This one was so pigmented and it was practically opaque in just 1 coat. I always do 2 coats for any polish, so that 2nd comes in and smooths out any texture showing from my ridges and really brings out the shine. And that shimmer gives it the most metallic finish of all.

We continue on to ‘Millennium Mocha’ (and this name sounds like a collab between Starbucks and the Backstreet Boys). Now looking at this shade in the bottle, it has so much golden shimmer that got stuck to the sides so I was expecting a much more yellow shade, which you can see in the swatch photos. To my surprise, we had instead a warm metallic brown shade. It’s almost coppery on the nails, and I’m not mad about the loss of gold because it feels absolutely cozy.

This had another gorgeous formula, and was practically opaque in just 1 coat. It basically paints itself on and this was stunning!

See I’m not mad about the gold above, because we have 2 gold shades next. This first shade might just be the most metallic shade of the bunch. It shines on the nails, and it gets as close to chrome as you can with regular polish. This is ‘SaTURN Me On’, and it’s a perfect “old gold”. There’s almost some olive, maybe some bronzey-ness to it, and it’s so interesting.

Again, this had just so much pigment on the nails. I was already impressed with these formulas, and this one blew me away. It was opaque in just 1 coat, though of course I always use 2 coats for every swatch. There’s a tiny bit of brushstrokes since it’s a metallic formula, but they’re not too noticeable. It’s hard for pictures to do it justice, as it almost glows on the nails.

Our 2nd of 2 golds, ‘Metallic Rewind’, is the brighter, much more yellow gold. You get two little “sub-genres” of gold with these two shades, both a little different from a traditional gold.

This had another easy 2 coat formula. I had just the tiniest amount of sheerness at the tips of my nails after the 1st coat. The 2nd coat comes in and evens everything out and makes it fully opaque. This one had one of the smoothest finishes, and keeps up that glow on the nails.

Now let’s get on into some COOLER TONES. First up we have ‘Y2Slay’ and okay yes, it’s a cringey name but what were the 2000s if not cringe. This shade is a bright cobalt blue. It’s one of those shades that I could see myself wearing all year, not just in these cooler fall times, but also in the heat by the pool, or while watching a snowstorm out the window.

Now this one didn’t feel quite the same as the others, and had the “squishiest” formula. It felt almost jelly like as I applied it, meaning it was much less pigmented than I was expecting with that bold color. It does build up well with 2 coats – though depending on your application this is the only shade I could see needing 3 coats. I did end up using 3 coats to further brighten up the color, but it did paint on evenly with each coat. It’s a little strange that they didn’t continue on with that same metallic formula, but maybe it’s something with the color pigments used.

Now we’re back from that blue detour on into the true metallics again. This is ‘You’ve Got Nail’ and I just heard the AOL voice pop into my head. My parents didn’t have AOL but my grandmother did, and I would hear “you’ve got mail” every time as I logged onto the internet while visiting their house. Those millennial memories. Now, in the present times, this is a very cool toned, silvery lilac shade. It seems to be right in between a true purple and a blue, and I love a cool tone like this.

This also brings us back to that PIGMENT, so it’s practically opaque in just 1 coat. As always I did 2 coats with the 2nd one adding to the color and evening out any last patches. This one is very metallic, so there’s a chance of noticeable brushstrokes. To help lessen them, I always suggest painting as straight as you can.

‘CosMIC Drop’ continues on through the spectrum into full purple. This is a bright, almost fuchsia toned purple shade, with full pink tones to it. It’s very warm and pink toned, but next to a bright pink, you’ll see that purple come back in.

This one is a touch uneven on that 1st coat, but the 2nd coat comes in and smooths it all out and makes it opaque. Once again, watch out for those brushstrokes, but they’ll be much less noticeable in day to day life than in my bright lights.

‘Cyborn Again’ is actually ver similar to ‘CosMIC Drop’ above. They’re in the same color family, they’re cousins, they would be at holidays together, and I’m a little surprised we got both in the same set when there are so many other color options out there. But I am not Suzi, I cannot say why. This shade is a touch lighter and more silvery toned than ‘CosMIC Drop’. It’s like they took that shade as a base, and turned the color saturation on down (and I’m not mad at that)

The same comments all apply for this shade: it’s easily opaque in just 2 coats and is smooth and pigmented all around.

For these final 2 shades, we finish out in the neutral. ‘Supernova Pearl’ is not quite that traditional pearl color as the name says. It’s more of maybe a rose gold pearl, with some soft peachy tones to a platinum base.

It paints on smoothly with a 2nd coat coming in to even everything out and build up that color. With such a light color the brushstrokes are more apparent. So you know the drill, paint as straight as you can (I didn’t take my own advice on my middle nail here, did I).

Last but certainly not least, it’s only fitting that we finish out with a true silver. ‘Chrome Clawz’ is a fitting name, being a bright silvery, almost chrome silver. There might be the tiniest drop of yellow to it, giving it some warmth that true silvers don’t have. Once again, it just makes me feel cozier.

And I’m happy to report we finish out the collection with a gorgeous formula. Easily opaque in just 2 coats, it paints on smoothly and easily, and I have no complaints!

And that’s the set! I actually enjoyed these past two seasonal releases, both summer and fall from OPI, as they experiment, with one finish and focusing instead on the range of colors. These colors felt more unique and fun than the summer release overall, and the color palette goes so well together. Most here were super pigmented and opaque, only needing 1-2 coats. There was only one shade that deviated and could need 3 coats – ‘Y2Slay’. I’m not quite sure how that one slipped in, though it’s also not a terrible formula. It’s just more noticeable with the quality of the formulas before and after.

Overall I enjoyed it, and I can recommend any of these shades!
