China Glaze ‘Spellbound’ Halloween 2020 Collection – Swatches & Review

Listen, one thing I’ll forever love about China Glaze and something I hope they never stop doing is releasing collections just for Halloween. Some of their iconic and most talked about releases have been previous Halloween collections, and I’m sad that I didn’t join the nail community until after some of these classics. (Forever wanting a bottle of Don’t Let the Dead Bite). They have come out with some of the most weird and unique shades for these collections and just GIVE ME MORE.

Now 2020 has been real weird, and of course has affected releases overall. Because of –you know-, China Glaze didn’t release a fall collection for the year, but we still did get a Halloween release and that’s all I need. (I fully know at the point of posting that most of these shades are sold out, but I did still want to get this review up! Mostly for archival purposes, or for anyone who happens to run across them in a destash or otherwise!)

So today we’re looking at the China Glaze Spellbound collection, a 6 bottle release for Halloween! This features 3 matte finish shades, and 3 “normal” finish polishes. I grabbed 3 from PolishPick, but this collection was definitely very popular and was sold out in a lot of places by the time I was getting around to reviewing. I posted about missing out on 3 shades and one of my nail friends Joy from @JoyDumpling (follow her immediately) sent me the 3 I was missing! Forever the nail community is one of the most generous and the friendships I have from it are my favorites.

Alright random little wholesome friendship story aside, let’s get into the swatches!

Essie Game Theory Collection

Guess who’s feeling productive!!! Let’s see how long that lasts!!! And let’s see if I can finish up a couple more posts before it’s December already (when the heck did that happen how is it already more than halfway through November, make it stop). I’m rambling because I surprisingly don’t have a paragraph to start you out with. Who am I? I blame Daylight Savings.

So let’s get right into the polish! Today we’re looking at another Essie collection (they’ve been busy this year). This is the Game Theory collection, and it was released this fall time, right before their Fall collection. I finally gathered up all the shades and it’s time to talk about em! All the shades are still available on 8ty8beauty.com, where I purchased them. I’ve also seen them now popping up in a new display in CVS, so hey-o suddenly popular again!

This collection has 6 shades all with a matte velvet finish. I’ve been loving all of the matte finish polishes that have dropped this fall and winter, and JUST GIMME ALL THE MATTES. I love any sort of matte finish on a polish, and especially shimmery polishes like these ones. I’ll stop blabbering and just let you see how pretty these are already. Let’s get into the swatches now!

Color Club Matte-ified Metallics Collection

PURCHASED

Whew! It’s been a while! Well, a while to me. Maybe you haven’t noticed, maybe you don’t care. But it’s been a WHILE. Couple quick life updates because as always, this is my blog and I can talk about what I want. (I promise we’ll get into the polish).

ANYWAYS. Firstly, I was wrapped up in a project! My old boss puts on art shows once a year, and he messaged me saying to submit a piece! (I graduated with a degree in design and am in the art field for my real job). As I haven’t at all changed, I procrastinated and then my whole weekend before this past one was a full one of just madly finishing a piece and getting it sent out. And it was sent out early because I had a family wedding this weekend in Tennessee! It ended up being so much fun and I was so glad to see family members that I hadn’t seen in so long. All good things all around, but of course, all things that took up my time! Now I’m back and getting my shit together and getting back on schedule.

And that schedule includes lots of polish to talk about and lots of reviews on their way!

***

Now this lovely collection, I posted about it quite a while ago – and then life got in the way, see above – and these beautiful swatches were just sitting and waiting for me in all their beauty. It’s finally time to get them on out.

This is the Color Club Matte-ified Metallics collection, and as you can tell, it contains 6 shades of matte metallic finishes. I grabbed these from the Color Club website when they were 50% off. They’re $8.50 each normally, but Color Club is always having sales, so definitely watch their Instagram, and you can always grab the polishes for at least 30% off pretty regularly.

Let’s get on into the swatches and let them talk for themselves! Also, can we talk about those frosted bottles? You wanna sell me something, put it in a frosted bottle. *drools*

Sinful Colors x Bebe Rexha ‘Velvet Obsession’ Collection

At this point in time, every time I go back to my parents house in Michigan, they fully expect and understand that I’ll disappear at some point, on an adventure to Walmart for Walmart exclusive polishes and makeup. They might not quite get it, but at this point they no longer question it. Who would have ever thought I would miss Walmart while living in Chicago?

Most of the time on these quests, it’s to find the newest Sinful Colors collection, and this last visit was no different. I zoomed on over and almost gasped audibly when I found the display, and snatched all the colors up with my little grabby hands.

The collection I’m talking about, and that we’re looking at today, is the new collection from Sinful Colors in collaboration with Bebe Rexha. It’s called ‘Velvet Obsession’ and features 8 shades with a “Velvet Matte Finish”. 3 of the shades, ‘Glam N Roses, ‘Dark Romance’ and ‘Twisted Obsession’, have the sticker “Bebe’s Shade” on them, and I believe those are the 3 Bebe helped to create herself.

They’re in frosted bottles, and I’m a sucker for any sort of frosted bottle. I’m like the -Homer Simpson voice- “Mmmmm, frosted bottles”. They just look so classy.

These can be found exclusively at Walmart stores right now. I do wish they were online like their other collections, but definitely look for the displays at your Walmart store. They retailed for $2.99 each.

Let’s get right into the colors!

NOTD: China Glaze ‘Turned Up Turquoise’

I’m continuing with wearing polishes that I haven’t photographed yet! I put them all in a spreadsheet and by my count there’s currently 144. Yeah I have a lot to go, but that’s great for everyone because NAIL SWATCHES FOR DAYS.

Today I have a China Glaze polish. This is ‘Turned Up Turquoise’, a bright neon, well, turquoise.

This dries matte, so fast dry times, but it can also be a little difficult to work with. My favorite way to apply mattes is to load up the brush a little more, and do a little thicker coat. Then just swipe it on with a few brush strokes – manipulate it as little as possible or else you’re get streaks everywhere.

This was 3 coats for me, but it was just so bright and fun. Adding a top coat to it will really bring out the shimmer in it, but I left it matte here.

TurnedUpTeal

One terrible thing about matte finishes though: they chip in about 6 minutes. Something to remember.

Stay tuned for more NOTDs and reviews coming up!
