Holo Taco ‘Unicorn Dreams’ Collection – Swatches & Review

Listen, I’ve just put on Braveheart so I think it’s a perfect time to catch up on some blog posts. I’ve been doing a hefty amount of swatching lately, so it’s time to put out the accompanying review posts! (As always, you can follow my Instagram to see swatches as they come out as well!) Alright, I’m trying to be less wordy since I know people just want to get right into the review, so let’s do it!

Holo Taco is truly a brand that I wish I had unlimited money so I could buy every single release, but since I don’t, every so often I’m just like SCREW IT, TREAT MYSELF, and I hit add to cart. (If you didn’t know, it’s the brand of Cristine, of SimplyNailogical fame on Instagram and YouTube. So kind of an indie, but I consider it a touch more mainstream at this point). And there was something about this one that tickled my fancy so I had to have it. There have been 2 more releases since this one, a trio of creams, and then a pastel rainbow linear collection (which hoo boy do I want that one).

This is the ‘Unicorn Dreams’ release and it features 2 creams, and adds 3 more Unicorn Skin toppers to her previous 3. I had been wanting to try the Unicorn Skins anyways, and then these 2 creams were just stunning so it got me good. This bundle is still available on the Holo Taco website for $55, or the creams (or cremes as they are called on the website) retail for $11 each and the toppers for $13 each. (If you’re not sure what a Unicorn Skin topper it, it’s explained down below near the swatches!).

Let’s get into the swatches!

Up first we have the two cream shades of the collection. They’re definitely more of a brighter, almost neon formula, so of course I needed them.

‘What Do You Pink?’ (one of SimplyNailogical’s catchphrases is Whaddaya think and I hear that in my head every time I look at this) is a bright cool-toned pink with almost purple undertones to it.

Most will be good with just 2 coats on this shade, though I did do a 3rd to cover up any last patches I had peeking through because of the ridges in my nails. It’s definitely a thicker formula, but not so thick that it’s difficult to work with. Instead, it’s super smooth and easy to control thicker coats on the nail. I loved this so much.

‘Cyantific’ (we love a good play on words) is a bright aqua blue cream shade. This had a stunning formula and was an easy two coats! I wore this as a full manicure one weekend, and it wore so well on the nails and was just so bright and fun. Again, a thicker formula, but it just made it easy to control and super smooth.

If Holo Taco comes out with an entire collection of these almost neon creams, I’m going to snatch them up so fast.

And now into the main event, the 3 Unicorn Skin toppers. If you’re not sure what a Unicorn Skin topper is, it’s always a clear base topper with these iridescent flakes that shift through multiple colors. They come in all different colors and shifts, and they really transform any shade they’re over! I chose to show them over a black polish – also from Holo Taco called One Coat Black – so that you could really see the shifts and the colors. But they are also stunning and fun over the pink and blue from this collection, as well as white. I can’t wait to continue to play around with them!

First up we have ‘Sonic Unicorn Skin’. This one shifts from a deeper, almost indigo and deep blue, to a bright almost pink-purple. This is one coat over black, and as you can see these toppers are dense and lay down an even layer of flakes. They’re smooth, and I didn’t experience any flakes sticking up or causing it to be uneven.

And every since Cristine showed the flakes mattified, I can’t get enough of the look! It really makes the colors pop and helps to show the shift even more. This is just 1 coat of matte top coat over the flakes.

Which finish do you like? Glossy or matte?

Continuing right along we have ‘Galactic Unicorn Skin’. This one is even more shifty than the previous. It shifts from a bright yellow-green, through a teal, a blue and even with hints of bright purple. This one is truly magical, and I absolutely loved it over black! Again, just one coat and it’s nicely dense and evenly distributed.

And off course, mattified!

Last up we have ‘Lunar Unicorn Skin’. This shifts from bright green, to a yellow, to a bright orange, even red. As you can see, this one was definitely the most densely packed of the 3 shades, and covered the base more. If you want a more scattered look, you can definitely wipe off the brush and place the flakes a little more.

And of course, mattified. It just reminds me of fall leaves for some reason, anyone else? I know it’s almost summer.

And that’s the collection! Now I realize, these might not be “exciting” to people who a ton of experience with indie polishes. However, I only swatch mainstream, so I’m coming from that perspective! I love getting to try out these new finishes, and adding them to my collection. And the toppers are so interesting, and transform any shade they’re over! I know I’ll be using them much more, and now I’m so intrigued by the other 3 she released!

Do any of these catch your eye?

  1. “What do you think?” *Multiple voice overlays* “What do you think?” *Shaking screen effect with rumbling and filters* “WHAT DO YOU THINK?”. Holo Tacos are quite beautiful, especially the unicorn skins (though the name seems a little morbid to me). I find it kind of funny that she now has a pinkish creme, even though I think she has stated that she found them boring in the past. Have you tried any of the flakes on other colours? If so, what kind of colour combinations are your favourite, or surprised you?

    • That was exactly what I heard in my head every time I was swatching 😂 and I feel like she’s appreciating them a little more now that she gets to make the formulas for them and as for bases for her toppers.
And I actually tried them over the pink and blue and it’s so cool! I’ve also seen the pics of them over white and it surprised me how they looked! It just adds a little dimension and iridescence to any lighter polish that’s difficult to fully show in photos!
