Y’all when the Instagram algorithm is goin’ wild and causing stress, I always love knowing this blog will be here, being consistent and lovely. Thank you all always for reading, and I can’t wait to focus even more on this as the year continues on! This platform keeps me sane, and who knows, maybe blogs will have a big comeback! I only hope it’s a lovely resource for you all on your polish journey!
Alright enough blabbering, let’s talk about some nail polish, shall we?
It’s been a new thing in recent years that Essie releases 76 collections per year, so of course we’re looking at another one! I haven’t even looked into the Gel Couture or Expressie releases, because their regular polish line is keeping me busy enough!
This newest one is the ‘Have a Ball’ collection, and it’s 6 shades inspired by tennis! Now, when I heard this and saw previews of this collection, I had an absolutely mighty need. See, I played tennis all throughout high school, and still love to play and watch it today, so I just wanted it so badly. I was scouring the web for where to find these while Wimbledon played in the background. (Any other tennis fans? Do you have a fave player?)
These are available at select CVS stores – I know they released in the UK as well before they came to the US. I was lucky enough that an Instagram friend found them for me and sent them on over! Now these shades are absolutely gorgeous and fun, so let’s get right into them!
All of these shades dry with a semi-matte finish. So not chalky matte, and not entirely glossy as well. It does make the coats dry faster and easier. But I always like to show polish how it’ll be on the nails, so no top coat here, this is exactly how they’ll look dry!
Going right in number order, up first we have ‘Make a Racquet’. This is a white cream shade with just a touch of gray to it. It makes it a touch softer and squishier than a pure white cream, and I love it! I did 3 thin coats on this one, but I think with smoother nails, you can get away with just 2. But with the semi-matte finish, these dry quickly so 3 coats won’t take you too long at all.
As always I included links to my live swatches as well so you can see the formula in action!
Next up we have the namesake of the collection, and it sure is perfect for a tennis-themed collection. This is the perfect tennis ball yellow-green (is it yellow? is it green? It can really go either way), and I love this weird shade. I always love the weird shades, okay.
Again, I did 3 coats, but with my ridged nails I’m often doing an extra coat that most won’t need!
Continuing right along, we have ‘Serving Looks’. This is a gorgeous blue-toned purple cream shade. This was one of the more saturated shades of the collection, so it was just 2 easy coats even on my ridge-y nails.
‘Perfect Match-Point’ is a gorgeous coral-pink shade with definite warm undertones. And you know the drill, 2 coats for most with smooth nails, while I went ahead and added a 3rd to smooth any last patches.
‘Doubles Trouble’ is our one undeniable green of the collection. It definitely has some warmth to it, and almost yellow undertones. Another easy 2 coat formula here, even with my ridged nails!
The last shade is ‘Love All Game’. This is a lovely almost coral orange shade – there’s some definite pink undertones to it. It’s pretty well opaque in 2, though I did add a 3rd for any last patches.
And that’s the collection, I loved the bright saturated colors we got here, which are perfect for summer! They did feel a touch thinner than other Essie cream formulas I have, with a lot requiring 3 coats to fully smooth out – I’m not sure if it’s the semi-matte finish or the brightness of them. But as I said, the matte finish makes them dry more quickly so 3 coats isn’t bad. In the end it’ll depend if you think that’s worth it, or if any colors catch your eye!
