My Nail Story!

Hello 2017! I can’t wait for this year honestly. I’ll be graduating college, traveling Europe with my 2 best friends, and then moving to Chicago to find a real adult job. It’s going to be crazy, but I can’t wait! Bring on 2017!

So I figured since it’s the start of a new year, it’s only fitting to make my first post of 2017 my nail story! This is the story of how I’ve gotten to the crazy nail polish hoarder I am today. I wasn’t always like this, I swear.

Now as a young child, I always like playing with nail polish. I honestly have no idea where that came from, as my mom never wore it. She’s a nurse, so the constant hand-washing all day every day just wears polish off her hands like no other. So my nail polish was just probably me finding one bottle and just going nuts.

I remember 2 colors I used to have for sure. I have no idea what brand they’re from, and I’m sure they’re long gone by now. But one was a sheer milky pink color, while the other was a bright pink fuchsia. They were in the weirdest shaped bottles, but whatever. I also had a singular OPI, back before I even knew how hyped OPI was. It was just a pretty silver color to me. So my nail polish collection back then was pretty standard – random 6 bottles of polish that I would randomly grab and use every so often.

I remember always wanting to paint my cousin’s nails too – hey there Ellen. So it was obvious that I had a polish hoarder hidden away deep down inside me from birth.

I don’t remember that much after that – until college. My freshmen year, I met my friend Molly. Now Molly had the nail polish stash that everyone wanted. She had a container full of all the colors you could ever want, and I would often go to her room to paint my nails. Maybe I should blame Molly for this?

I also got a job at Starbucks at the end of the year, and would work there for my entire sophomore year and summer after. Now during this time, I couldn’t wear nail polish on my hands because there’s a chance of it chipping in the drinks. So I couldn’t really wear nail polish that often. My friend Sam would tell me she could tell when I wasn’t working for a couple days because I would paint my nails.

But then, before Thanksgiving of my junior year I got my current job in the Marketing department, where I could paint my nails freely as I wanted.

And then I went nuts.

I had my final shift at Starbucks, and went home for Christmas break, and I WENT HAM. Oh my god I bought so many nail polishes.

I think there was something in me that just clicked and I was like, I need to buy everything and put it on my nails. I went to my Rite-aid and just found every discount nail polish I could. I think that was when I started watching nail polish videos? Who knows. But I packed up all my nail polish and headed back to school.

I tried to start a makeup blog a couple of times, and each time it just dropped off. I would honestly try to do it in “secret”, which cracks me up when I think about it now. I would quick take photos of products when my roommates weren’t home, and hurry and put everything back when I saw them coming home. Weird.

I would post nail swatches on Snupps every so often, even before I started my blog. I saw nail blogs and I loved the idea. I just didn’t know how to start, or rather, how to keep up a blog.

Oh my gosh look at those lil’ stubs. The rough cuticles, the uneven nails, and awkward hand positions. I love looking and seeing how far I’ve come. It was weird that the day I decided to do this, before I started, I just put on the same polish. Maybe it’s my January polish.

Fast forward to the summer before my senior year. I moved into a new apartment with my best friend Sam and I’m just livin’ life. I don’t exactly remember what spurred me to do it, I think because I got the L’Oreal gold dust polishes and all of a sudden I realized I could do a nail polish blog. So I made that first post.

And 6 months, and 300+ polishes later, here I am. I can’t wait to see where this goes, and I’ve loved every second of it.

I’ve learned that no matter what, you just gotta start. It might be scary, but you never learn anything until you just start. Can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store for me.

What’s your nail polish story?

SwatchWeek – Day 5 – Revlon

It’s the last day of SwatchWeek! We made it! I survived a whole week of swatching polishes at my parents house with inadequate lighting. I think that’s a Christmas miracle in itself. I honestly had a lot of fun doing this, and it allowed me to try out the polishes of lesser known brands I had sitting in my collection. I definitely have some new favorites! I hope to do this again sometime.

Now let’s get on in to the final day of SwatchWeek! Today I have 6 polishes from Revlon. These are their normal polishes from their core line. Some of these I did find discounted down to $2, so be sure to watch out in your Walgreens!

Let’s start!

SwatchWeek – Day 4 – Funky Fingers

Hey-o, it’s Day 4 of SwatchWeek! Just one more day after this, tomorrow!

Today I have 5 Funky Fingers polishes to show you! Funky Fingers can be found in Five Below stores (if you don’t have a Five Below near you, I weep for you because they’re so incredible. I specifically go in them for their nail polish, and because they sell discounted City Color Cosmetics makeup. Anyways).

One of my friends, Molly, who I can give some credit to for enabling my nail polish addiction, always had Funky Finger nail polishes, and I was so intrigued. So finally, one day when I went into Five Below, I picked up some polishes.

I have 2 polishes that change color in the sunlight, and then 3 of their normal polishes! The Sunlight polishes were 2/$5 while the normal polishes were 3/$5.

Let’s get into the swatches!

SwatchWeek – Day 3 – Wet ‘N Wild 1 Step Wonder Gel

Welcome back! It’s Day 3 of SwatchWeek – this one is on the correct day, did you notice that? The rest will be as regularly scheduled, so don’t you fret.

Up today, we have some Wet ‘N Wild 1 step gel polishes! These claim to be like gel without the light – but are also in black bottles, so I can only assume they’re more gel-like than other brands. I haven’t been able to truly test how long these last – little hard to do in a SwatchWeek, isn’t it. Someday I’ll test them and be sure to get a wear test out for you!

I have 4 shades from this polish style, and they came in a lovely holiday gift set that I got from my sweet friend Cassi for my birthday. Thanks Cass! You can find the Holiday set still at Walgreens.

There are 3 creams, and 1 one shimmery polish. Let’s get into Day 3!

SwatchWeek – Day 2 – Finger Paints

Welcome to Day 2 – ish. I know this is a day late. Who could have guessed I would get behind on this during break. I can explain, I swear. I had friends visiting during the day so this meant no time to post.

And then, I reshot all of my photos because my lighting was terrible, and now they are much better and more color accurate. I’ll never take my lighting setup back home for granted again.

Don’t you worry, Day 3 will also be coming later today as well.

Onto Day 2!

SwatchWeek – Day 1 – Formula X The Effects Nail Polish

Welcome to SwatchWeek! This whole week, (Monday through Friday) I’ll be uploading new posts of polishes hanging out in my stash that need to be loved. Most, if not all, of these polishes are still available to buy, so last minute Christmas ideas? Yes? Christmas gift ideas for yourself? More likely.

Let’s get into Day 1 with some Formula X!

A while back, when I was in Vegas for a conference, we spent a free day shopping, so of course we wandered to Sephora. I had to *of course* look at the nail polish. Formula X had their ‘Effects’ Nail polishes on sale for $5. FIVE. DOLLARS. These are normally $15 a piece, so I immediately snatched up any colors they had left on display. I got 3 this day.

The Effects are nail polishes of differing textures and finishes.

So let’s get into the swatches!

Swatch/Review: OPI ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ Holiday 2016 Collection

Late? But it’s still the holidays, so everyone else is simply early.

I have some of the Breakfast at Tiffany’s shades from OPI today! Now, I’m going to be honest, I have not seen the movie, so all of these shade names really go over my head. Oh well. It’s still pretty nail polish.

This was supposed to go up Thursday, but that was my 22nd birthday! Yay! My lovely roommate and best friend bought me tickets to go see Panic! at the Disco, so obviously my Thursday was not spent blogging, and instead spent looking at Brendon Urie. Swoon. But now we’re in the middle of a big snowstorm, so what better thing to do than blog! I’m so cozy in a blanket right now.

Let’s just get into the swatches.

Zoya ‘Enchanted’ Winter 2016 FULL Collection

I’m going to preface this post by saying, I don’t have all of the polishes for this collection. YET.* (I do now) So here’s the story.

I ordered this collection, along with a few other polishes in Zoya’s Black Friday sale. It shipped, it was delivered, I pulled the package out of the box, and… one of the polishes was smashed inside the package. Polish everywhere. I promptly cleaned it up, getting blue everywhere, and got right onto emailing customer service. Luckily they were so lovely, and immediately sent out another bottle of Waverly. I should have that by Friday, so I’ll be sure to update the post, and label it with Full collection when I truly have all 6.

*UPDATE! I have them all now. Right away I emailed Zoya’s customer service. They were very lovely, and shipped out a replacement polish, and I got it within the week! I was very satisfied. So I have the full collection.

In this collection there are 6 polishes, 2 duochromes, and 4 of Zoya’s ‘Pixiedust’ formula – aka textured polishes. I’ll start with the duochromes.

Swatch/Review: Essie Winter 2016 FULL Collection

Happy belated Thanksgiving! From visiting with the family and stuffing myself, to catching up on homework that I didn’t touch over winter break, there was a little break in my posting. But here I am! Full on into holidays! We only have so much time before Christmas, crazy to think about!

I picked up the Zoya Holiday collection in their Black Friday sale so a review will be coming on that, as well as a review on the OPI collection as well at least before Christmas. I want to pick up the China Glaze collection as well, but if that has to wait until after Christmas and just be a winter collection, it will. I’m coming up on finals guys so it’s getting crazy!

But now, let’s get on into the Essie Winter 2016 collection! This is a 6 shade collection.

Swatch/Review: Colourpop ‘Zingara’ Quad

Whaaaaattt? Makeupppp?? On the nail blog? That’s right, makeup! Makeup is another one of my great loves and I want to start featuring it on my blog more. And, you know, it’s my blog so I can do what I want.

This blog will still be focused primarily on nail polish, so don’t worry. I will be posting swatches of the mainstream collections and other finds I have as I can, first and foremost.

I can’t say that I’ll have all of the newest releases when it comes to makeup – because I’m already trying to do that with nail polish. I don’t got all the money in the world. Nah, it’ll be little finds here and there that I pick up, that I just want to talk about in case anyone else is curious. And it’ll always be drugstore (or drugstore priced in this case) makeup, since I truly believe you can create a full, beautiful face all at the drugstore. But that’s a whole other blog post.

So welcome to Gingerly Polished, a blog all about nail polish. And the other side of Gingerly Polished, where you can create a fully polished you at the drugstore.

Now onto my first makeup feature!
