Y’ALL, FALL collections are already being previewed and released, and oooh boy, when it’s supposed to be a high of 99 this Friday, it’s hard to think about fall, even with it being my favorite season. I shouldn’t be shocked, as makeup and nail polish are always ahead, but I’m still catching up! Don’t worry, they’ll be coming to the blog soon enough.
For now, we still got a couple more summer collections to talk about!
In this review, we’re looking at the Essie Summer 2019 collection. I have the Zoya Summer collection coming up after this one, and then we’ll be finished with summer reviews! Crazy to think about!
This is a collection of 6 creams, with 3 more orange-toned shades, and then 3 bright pops of color. Now Essie calls all of these shades “neon”. However, I think at most 2 or 3 would count under that label, but you’ll have to see for yourself.
This collection definitely took a little bit of hunting to track down, but I finally got it. There are a couple left on transdesign.com, and they’re in stock now on 8ty8beauty.com – if you’re looking for discounted prices! I ended up buying 3 of the shades from target.com, so they’re out and about at various drugstores as well – but it’s definitely a popular collection! Let’s look at the shades!
All of these are cream shades, and I found all of these shades dried with a more satin finish, or as Essie calls it, a “demi-matte” finish. That also means they did dry a little faster than a normal cream. If you want a glossy look, you’ll have to add a top coat on top.
First we’re looking at the 3 orange shades of the collection.
‘In Full Swing’ is the lightest and most pastel of the group. It’s a soft peach cream shade. This had a smooth 1st coat, though I had some unevenness, and my ridges showed through. It was pretty well good in 2, although depending on your application and thickness of coats, you might need a 3rd to cover up any last streaks.
The next orange shade is one of the only ones that I consider a true neon in the collection. This is ‘Soles on Fire’ and it’s a bright neon orange creamsicle shade. This had a streaky first coat, but it evened out and built up well in 2 coats. I had some ridges still that were peeking through, so you might need a 3rd depending on your nails. For most people, it’ll be fine in 2 easy coats.
The last orange is the more terracotta orange cream shade, ‘Claim to Flame’. This had a stunning formula and it was pretty well opaque in 1 coat. Absolutely beautiful, and an unexpected color for summer, which I loved! It’s going to be a beautiful transition to fall as well. All around, an unexpected favorite for me in the collection.
Now, onto the other 3 brighter shades!
First up, this was another that I was so excited to get onto my nails as I saw previews for it. This is ‘Strike a Rose’ and she’s a stunning warm-toned bright pink shade. This had a good 1st coat, though it can pool at the ends of the nails and be a little uneven if you apply too thick of a coat. It was pretty good in 1, though I did need a 2nd to brighten up the color, and make it fully opaque. Super beautiful, and I did love the satin finish on this one!
‘Take the Lead’ is a bright sky blue cream shade. This was another with a good 1st coat, but I did have to do a 2nd to cover up any last unevenness and ridges. But overall an easy 2 coat formula. And another stunning color!
Last but certainly not least, we have ‘Tangoed in Love’. This could almost be argued as a neon? It’s a super bright purple shade, and so beautiful. This had a touch of jelly to the formula, making it have a more squishy look on the nails. Because of that, on the 1st coat it was a little uneven overall, but it was an easy 2 coats to cover everything up. Absolutely beautiful, and I can’t stop gushing about all of these colors.
If you can’t tell, I ended up LOVING this entire collection. I think it might be my favorite of all of the summer collections I’m swatching this year (sorry to the ones coming up after this). These ended up all being stunning colors, and perfect for the summer heat, while still being unique shades to my collection. I love the way they all went together. I’ll stop gushing now, but I recommend all of these. I’m in love.
